As a full-time editor for Writers Digest books, Chuck Sambuchino has his finger on the pulse of the publishing industry, especially when it comes to literary agents. Each year, Sambuchino updates, revises and includes new articles in the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents, which makes each edition feel like a brand new book.
Any writer looking to find a literary agent should have a copy of the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents. It is more than just a market guide with the contact information for agents. It is a helpful resource with great articles that will help you stay in tune with the current happenings in the industry.
“As the publishing industry continues to evolve,” writes Sambuchino, “writers need literary agents now more than ever. If you want to get published by a big publishing house that can distribute and promote your book—and ebook—everywhere, you need an agent who can access editors and negoitiate the best deal for you.”
The 2012 Guide to Literary Agents provides authors everything they need to be prepared. The first section of the book includes informative articles by Sambuchino and other writing professionals with titles like: Avenues to an Agent, Crafting a Query, Nonfiction Book Proposals and Agents and Self-Publishing.
One article in the screenwriting section, Think Like a Script Agent or Producer, written by Trai Cartwright, gives 10 tips on scoring an agent or producer for your screenplay.
“Understanding the filter through which a producer, director or agent reads a script,” writes Cartwright, “will help you identify all the potential No’s in your script.”
Another important resource to have along with the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents, is the 2012 Writer’s Market, by Robert Lee Brewer. The 2012 Writer’s Market is filled with articles about finding publishers, how to promote your work, freelancing, self-publishing, along with an extensive list of markets for magazines, agents, publishers and even greeting card companies.
I am privileged to be a part of this great resource with my article, The Art of Promotion. I interviewed a variety of successful authors like Laura Resau, LeAnn Thieman, Greg Campbell, and Christina Katz to find out the creative ways they promote their books.
Most writers understand that acquiring the right agent, publisher or market is necessary to seeing their work in print. In the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents , and the 2012 Writer’s Market, Sambuchino and Brewer provide the needed tools to give writers a better chance of finding writing success.
Do you have your copies of these market guides yet?

I would LOVE a copy! As a writer looking to find a literary agent, a copy of the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents sounds like a great way to start a new year - perfect for my upcoming novel being written in this year's NaNoWriMo!
I had the pleasure of seeing him at a writer's conference this year. I would absolutely love a copy.
The daunting task of sorting through agent listings online has become futile! This 2012 guide would be a welcome sight- something tangible and real. Being able to see agents listed in a respectable publication will offer validity to my hunt- I would love and appreciate the gift. The needed boost to keep me pushing to grab an agent and get this memoir published.
Thank you in advance for consideration,

I need one of these needed tools ;)
I've been compiling lists of agents based mainly on the books I've read and their acknowledgments. Always told this was a great way to start and would love a copy of the markets guide. Great resources for writers!
My copy is out of date--I'd love to get a new one! Chuck's fantastic. I love his blog.
Chuck is a awesome speaker and sooo funny! Is LOVE a copy of your guide! Sooo...throw me a bone! And a book! Lol
I've found Chuck's "Formatting & Submitting Your Manuscript" helpful, and am still working on refining his lessons and advice. This would be a wonderful addition to my fledgling career!
Nice to also see Delaney's name at the top of this blog.
I'd love to win. Struggling author, craptastic job, flailing economy + inflated banana prices = sad, impoverished me. Guide for 2012? Yes, plz! :-)
If the 2012 Guide is anything like the 2010 and 2011 guides it will be indispensable.
Would love a copy

I would love to have a copy of The 2012 Market Guide. I was lucky enough to have taken part in a session with Mr. Sambuchino at a writer's conference this past April. The information he shared has been invaluable to me and my co-writer and I would love to take our knowledge even further.
I would love a copy.
As much as I love the library, having a copy would prevent evil glares from the librarian when I scribble notes in the margins.
I turn 21 this weekend. A birthday gift would be wonderful! (hint hint)
Great post, I'm sure so many writers will benefit from the guide. Looking forward to seeing it in print.
I would really appreciate winning a copy of the 2012 Literary Agents Guide. In rural southern Illinois, I can't find many in our area to speak with regarding book publishing. Any assistance would be appreciated!
I need all the help I can get!

Hi Delaney and Kerrie -- (Don't include me in the drawing, but I had to leave a comment anyway.)
These guides are worth their weight in gold because of the great articles included along with the agent info -- and to have articles by Kerrie in the Market and Trai in the Guide...awesome for NCW. Congratulations!
Thanks for the shout-out, NCW! This Guide is essential to all writers, and Chuck and Robert did a particularly awesome job with this year's issue.
Good luck to all the commentors, but even if you don't win, pick yourself up a copy!
Agents - sounds like something a newbie like me needs :). And I would love to get my Nano work published. Thanks!
As someone who has been writing since she was seven years old, and is now working on her first novel, I'd love a copy.
Pick me! I need it the most!
Chuck is an incredible business resource for all writers. Bought the 2011 version and used it; look forward to seeing the 2012 edition soon.
Who wouldn't love a copy? ;-) The Guides to agents and literary markets are absolutely indispensable. There's usually a waiting list at our library for them--even the ones that are a few years old.
I'm just glad the library lets me borrow them. Some places don't let you leave a table with those kinds of things.
I am fifteen thousands words away from finishing my second edit of my 83K women's fiction novel! I am getting ready to query, this would be awesome! But thanks anyway for all the awesome info you post regularly. I've benefitted from it soooooooo much
I would love a copy! Thanks for hosting the giveaway.
This giveaway is great! I'm seeking an agent and this book would be perfect! :)

I would value a copy and I could share information about it with my students. I am a college writing and literature instructor.
Yes, yes, please! (I have to be polite, I'm Canadian)
I have heard so much about the official Guide to Literary Agents, and would only be too pleased to win. :)
Kerrie and Delaney, thanks for the great post.
I so need these books, especially the agent guide. Love the wisdom of Chuck. Congrats on the article, Kerrie:)
Congratulations to both Kerrie and Trai for having articles published in the Guide.
I don't think my 2008 copy is of much use any longer. Throw my name in the hat, too. I certainly can't do this alone...
Always a great thing to have on hand, would love a copy! Also so glad to have stumbled upon your blog. Love CO writers!
I haven't had a new copy of either of these books since the mid-90s, which is probably the reason I can't find any information on on-line publications or agent websites. So, a new copy would be most appreciated.
I would love a copy. It looks like an amazing tool.
Thank you all for stopping by The Writing and entering to win the 2012 Guide to Literary Agents. And the winner is....
Elspeth Antonelli
Congratulations Elspeth. I will be in touch to find out where to send your book.
